Allen & Overy Llp issued the following announcement on July 19.
As of last year, Allen & Overy has partnered with Legal Outreach, an organization that uses intensive legal and educational programs to prepare youth from underserved communities in New York City to compete at high academic levels. For the second year in a row, Allen & Overy welcomed a class of female rising-ninth graders (thirteen and fourteen years old) to its New York offices for an interactive workshop as part of the Summer Law Institute (SLI) Program, a five-week intensive course intended to introduce students to future careers in law. Over the course of the event held July 12, the SLI students met Allen & Overy attorneys from various practice groups who shared their experiences working in the legal industry and highlighted their specific areas of expertise.
Hosted by the A&O U.S. Women’s Committee, the luncheon reinforced A&O’s partnership with the Legal Outreach as one of A&O New York’s Community Investment Projects.
Throughout the day, the students were immersed in varied areas of the law, including litigation, corporate, environmental and IP. They learned about the purpose and application of these practices. In one session, students were challenged to draw connections between environmental law and real-life situations, such as the implications for companies and individuals that conduct activities that impact the environment. The students also explored the role of an M&A transactional lawyer through a hands-on case study on the acquisition of a reality television production company.
The day concluded with a panel featuring partner Rajani Gupta (Banking & Leveraged Finance Group) and associates Rachel Agress (Litigation Group and Women’s Committee Representative) and Shoshana Schorr (Tax Group) as well as Aubria Ralph (Summer Associate) and Britania Clarke (Intern). The panel answered questions submitted by the students about career paths geared towards becoming an attorney and stressed the importance of taking initiative as young women and was moderated by Jack Butz (Summer Associate).
Rachel Agress, associate representative on the Women’s Committee, said “We are honored to once again partner with Legal Outreach, helping to educate young minds with an interest in the legal field, and foster their growth and success for their future career path. The students showed fierce enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn as they debated complex legal issues. A special thank you to Legal Outreach, particularly Managing Director of Legal Education Grace Pickering and Summer Law Institute Coordinating Intern Ivy Allotey, as well as the A&O staff, attorneys and summer associates for such an engaging and enlightening event.”
